Counter Self-Will

O Lord, please give me the desire not to__(name your addiction, affliction or adversity)__________ anymore. Amen.

O Lord, please give me the desire not to____________ just for today. Amen.

O Lord, please give me the desire not to____________ right now. Amen.

O Lord, please give me the desire to have the desire not to ___________ anymore. Amen.

O Lord, please give me the desire to have the desire not to ___________ just for today. Amen.

O Lord, please give me the desire to have the desire not to ____________ right now. Amen.

O Lord, looking at you as you hang there completely helpless and powerless on the cross, and realizing all you did for me, the beyond inhumane torture you undertook, just to free from my sins, as if I were the only person in the universe. In your most powerless and helpless moment on earth, in that very instant you died, you freed every human being from their addiction/s, affliction/s adversity/ies, sins, character defects and weaknesses. Please lord help me to practice admitting complete powerlessness and helplessness over my addiction, affliction or adversity, (name it/them). Please help me to remember to look at you on the Cross, and think about you always being there for me -especially every time I feel the craving, urge or desire to begin my addiction, affliction or adversity, predominate sin, character defect, weakness or flaw again. Most especially, bring my memory of you to mind the instant I get those thoughts and images that almost appear to come out of nowhere and hunt me down, suggesting and trying to lure me away from being humble, courageous, sober, clean, honest, chaste and faithful for right now and for today. Amen.

EXERCISES TO COUNTER SELF-WILL

See yourself in situations, even if just in your mind, where you would typically get a burning desire, a craving, or become angry or envious, and practice doing the exact opposite: being, humble, meek, kind and mild. Then, next time the opportunity arises, in your mind intend on and practice, say, not losing your temper, no matter what. Begin to see that every time a situation arises that would normally make you angry, it is really an opportunity to practice the opposite, humility, meekness, kindness and goodness. You'll probably be amazed at yourself.

Put yourself in situations where you would normally be stingy and be generous instead.
